Hiking from Zlata Koruna to Cesky Krumlov |
Zlata Koruna was a small town with a large Cistercian Monastery established around 1263. The name Zlata Koruna means "golden crown" and comes from the fact that the monastery was a very wealthy one. Unfortunately it was Sunday and there were church services going on in the monastery so we could not check out the insides. From the monastery we hiked thru the town and up into the woods towards the hilltop at Klet where there was an astronomical observatory and an observation tower. The observatory was closed that day, bummer, so we climbed to the top of the observation tower instead. On a clear day you were supposed to be able to see the Austrian Alps to the southwest, but it was hazy and we couldn't see far. Nora saw a small coin between the slats of the wooden floor on top of the tower that someone must have dropped. She made it her quest for the day to liberate that coin from its hiding place. She must have spent about 15 minutes lying on the wooden floor trying to coax the coin up thru the slots using a penknife and tweezers. Fortunately, no one else came up the tower to witness her embarrassing behavior! She eventually succeeded and got the coin. It was somewhat of a hollow victory since the coin was worth less than one US cent. :-)
From Klet we followed the trail thru the woods and back down the hill. The trail eventually dropped us off onto a road which led us back into the town of Cesky Krumlov. We spent that evening roaming about Cesky Krumlov and its castle before we ate at a restaurant along the river. This was our last day in Cesky Krumlov since we were leaving for Prague the next morning.
